How School Bus Stops Can Become Dangerous for Children
Roadways near places like University Meadows Elementary School often see heavy traffic during morning and afternoon school hours. When buses stop to pick up or drop off students, drivers are typically required to slow down and stop to protect children crossing or approaching the bus.
Children walking toward a school bus may focus on reaching the bus rather than watching traffic. For this reason, school bus warning lights and extended stop signs are designed to alert drivers that students may be entering the roadway.
Passing a stopped school bus can create a dangerous situation because kids may cross in front of the bus, where drivers have limited visibility. Traffic rules around school buses are meant to reduce the risk of crashes and help keep students safe during daily travel to and from school.
