Hartford, ME (June 12, 2026) – Two women were seriously injured following a rollover accident on Bear Pond Road, also known as Route 219, in Hartford on Wednesday afternoon.
The crash occurred at approximately 4:40 p.m. when a 2015 Subaru Forester traveling west left the roadway and struck large rocks before overturning. Emergency units were dispatched after reports of serious injuries at the location.
The driver, a 52-year-old woman from Canton, was ejected from the vehicle and suffered life-threatening injuries. She was transported by air ambulance to Maine Medical Center in Portland. The passenger, a 65-year-old Canton woman, also sustained serious injuries and was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
A passing motorist stopped and pulled the passenger from the vehicle moments before it caught fire. The identities of those involved have not been released as family notifications are ongoing.
The roadway remained partially restricted as investigators continued their work at the crash site. We are thinking of those injured and hope for their recovery.
Why Rollover Crashes After Roadway Departure Can Be Severe
Rollover crashes often occur when a vehicle leaves the roadway and strikes uneven terrain such as rocks, ditches, or embankments. These sudden changes in surface height can destabilize a vehicle, increasing the risk of overturning.
Ejection from a vehicle significantly raises the likelihood of life-threatening injuries, particularly when occupants are not fully restrained or when the rollover involves multiple rotations. Even when seat belts are used, the forces involved in off-road rollovers can still cause serious harm.
After such crashes, investigators typically examine roadway departure points, terrain conditions, vehicle damage patterns, and possible contributing factors such as speed or distraction. These details help reconstruct how the vehicle left the roadway and overturned.
