Madera County, CA (January 1, 2026) – A devastating traffic collision involving an SUV and a semi-truck left two people dead and three others with major injuries in Madera County. The crash occurred on December 31 around 11:00 a.m. at the intersection of Road 23 and Avenue 13, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP investigators report that a white Honda CR-V carrying five individuals was traveling westbound on Avenue 13 when it approached a stop sign at the intersection. At the same time, a Freightliner semi-truck hauling sand was moving northbound on Road 23, which has no stop signs and holds the right of way. Authorities believe the SUV failed to stop and entered the path of the oncoming big rig, resulting in a broadside collision.
The force of the impact was so severe that four of the five people in the SUV were ejected from the vehicle. Two of the occupants died at the scene, while the remaining three were rushed to local hospitals with life-threatening injuries. The semi-truck driver was not hurt in the crash.
According to CHP Officer Sergio Moreno, seatbelt use was a significant factor in the incident, as four of the five SUV occupants were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
The California Highway Patrol has not yet determined whether alcohol or drugs were involved, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Our deepest condolences go out to the families of those who lost their lives in this tragic crash. We also wish strength and healing to those who are recovering from their injuries.
