Patterson, CA (May 2, 2026) – A semi-truck rollover crash shut down both directions of Interstate 5 on Friday morning near Patterson. The incident occurred shortly before 10:00 a.m. just north of Sperry Avenue.
Emergency units responded to the scene and found the overturned truck on its side in the median. Investigators said the driver turned left for unknown reasons and entered the median before attempting to regain control, causing the truck to overturn.
A 43-year-old man from Bakersfield who was inside the sleeper area of the truck suffered major injuries. He was taken to a hospital by helicopter. The driver, a 58-year-old man from Fillmore, sustained minor injuries and was also taken to a hospital.
The truck was hauling refrigerated liquid hydrogen, and reports of a gas odor led to a full closure of the interstate in both directions. Crews worked to secure the scene before reopening southbound lanes around 1:30 p.m. Northbound lanes reopened later in the afternoon.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
