St. Louis Co, MO (January 1, 2026) – A serious three-vehicle crash in St. Louis County sent two drivers to the hospital on Wednesday evening after a turning vehicle was rear-ended and pushed into oncoming traffic. The collision happened on December 31, at approximately 6:11 p.m. on eastbound Missouri Route 30 at the intersection with Route N.

Initial findings from the Missouri State Highway Patrol indicate that a 22-year-old male from Robertsville, MO, was driving a 2012 Mazda 3 eastbound and had come to a stop while waiting to make a left turn onto Route N. Behind him, a 62-year-old woman from Dittmer, MO, was traveling in a 2008 Honda CR-V. The woman failed to stop in time and struck the rear of the Mazda, which then traveled into the westbound lanes and was hit head-on by a 2008 Chevrolet Express van driven by a 40-year-old St. Louis man.

The Mazda sustained total damage and overturned after the impact. Emergency responders from St. Clair Ambulance transported the 22-year-old driver to Mercy Hospital Washington with moderate injuries. The driver of the Honda was also injured and taken to the same hospital with minor wounds. The van’s driver was not reported injured.

Both the Mazda and Honda were towed by Vogelgesang Towing, while the van was removed by South Broadway Motors. Troopers with MSHP Troop C, along with local emergency crews, managed the scene and continued investigating the sequence of the crash.

We extend our hopes for a full recovery to those injured in this incident.

Intersection Accidents in Missouri

Multi-vehicle crashes at intersections—such as the wreck Wednesday evening on Missouri Route 30—often unfold in split seconds but leave lasting consequences. In this case, what began as a routine left-turn maneuver quickly turned into a violent collision when a rear-end crash triggered an unavoidable head-on impact with a vehicle in oncoming traffic.

Route 30 is a heavily used corridor through St. Louis County, and intersections like the one at Route N see regular traffic from both commuters and local residents. When one driver fails to stop in time, the resulting chain reactions can create a dangerous cascade of impacts—especially when vehicles are pushed into opposing lanes.

Missouri continues to report a high number of injury crashes each year related to turning and following-distance errors. According to data from the Missouri Department of Transportation, rear-end collisions remain one of the most frequent crash types in the state, often linked to distracted driving, driver inattention, or failing to maintain a safe following distance.

In Wednesday’s crash, both injured drivers required hospital care, and at least one vehicle overturned—escalating the severity of the incident. While it appears all drivers were restrained, the damage to the vehicles and the nature of the impact show how easily these common crash types can lead to serious outcomes.

For those recovering from injuries in intersection-related crashes, the road to recovery often includes not only physical healing but also navigating medical bills, transportation challenges, and complex insurance claims. Securing accurate crash reports, documentation of injuries, and access to support services is critical during this time.
