How Motorcycle and Passenger Vehicle Crashes Often Happen at Intersections
Crashes between motorcycles and passenger vehicles frequently occur at intersections. Drivers may misjudge a motorcycle’s speed or fail to see it entirely, especially when turning across traffic. Motorcycles are smaller and less visible than most vehicles, which can increase the risk of impact at crossings like Southwest Pkwy and Elmwood Ave.
Side-impact crashes are common when one vehicle enters an intersection while another is already passing through. Even at moderate speeds, riders can suffer serious injuries because they lack the protection of an enclosed vehicle. Protective gear helps, but it does not prevent all harm.
Busy city intersections often involve multiple lanes, turning traffic, and changing signals. Staying alert, checking blind spots carefully, and reducing speed when approaching cross streets can help lower the chance of a serious motorcycle collision.
