How Rural Intersections Can Increase the Risk of Serious Crashes
Rural intersections often operate differently from those in urban areas. Some roads may have stop signs while cross traffic continues without stopping, which can create confusion for unfamiliar drivers.
When one roadway has the right-of-way, vehicles traveling on the intersecting road must stop and check carefully before crossing or turning. If a driver misjudges the speed of oncoming traffic, a crash can occur within seconds.
Higher travel speeds are also common on rural roads. Faster speeds reduce the amount of time drivers have to react if another vehicle enters the intersection.
Broadside crashes, sometimes called side-impact crashes, happen frequently in these locations. These collisions can be severe because the sides of vehicles provide less protection than the front or rear.
