How Many Crashes Happen Every Year on I-95 in Florida?
Interstate 95 (I-95) is one of the busiest highways in Florida, running the entire length of the state’s Atlantic coast through major cities like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Jacksonville. Since it carries extremely high traffic volumes, including commuters, tourists, and freight vehicles, it also sees a significant number of crashes each year.
In the Miami area, for example, reports estimate roughly 8,000 to 10,000 crashes annually on the local stretch of I-95, with about 50 to 70 fatal crashes each year. Around 35% of those crashes result in injuries, which highlights the severity often associated with interstate collisions where vehicles travel at higher speeds.
Statewide statistics also provide context for how common crashes are on major highways like I-95. Florida recorded 362,063 total traffic crashes in 2025, averaging about 992 accidents per day across the state. These incidents include collisions on highways, local roads, and urban streets, but heavily traveled interstates contribute significantly to the overall numbers.
Several factors explain why crashes are so frequent on I-95. The highway passes through densely populated metropolitan areas and often experiences congestion, aggressive driving, and heavy freight traffic. Speeding, distracted driving, and drivers weaving through traffic are also common contributing causes of highway accidents in Florida.
The data consistently shows that thousands of crashes occur along the corridor annually, making it one of the state’s most accident-prone highways.
