West Valley City, UT (March 3, 2026) – A 15-year-old girl died, and four other students were hurt following a rollover crash on Tuesday morning near 4100 South and 8400 West in West Valley City. The crash involved a single SUV carrying nine Cyprus High School students, traveling eastbound on a dirt road near the school.
Emergency units responded around 10:50 a.m. after the vehicle rolled. One student was ejected and killed, while four others were taken to the hospital with injuries ranging from minor to moderate. Four students were unharmed. Officials believe speed may have contributed to the rollover, though the exact cause remains under review. Authorities also noted that the victim, who was ejected, was likely not wearing a seatbelt.
The portion of 4100 Southwest of 8400 West has been closed indefinitely. School district staff and a crisis team were present to support students, staff, and families affected by the incident.
The incident remains under review by authorities. Our condolences go out to the victim’s loved ones, and we are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
What Safety Factors Are Considered in Student Vehicle Rollovers?
Single-vehicle rollovers often happen when a driver loses control due to speed, sharp turns, or uneven surfaces. Dirt or gravel roads can reduce traction, making vehicles more likely to skid or tip. Seatbelt use significantly reduces the risk of ejection and serious injury in rollovers. Vehicle type and load can also influence stability, as SUVs and taller vehicles are more prone to tipping. Emergency response and timely medical care can affect outcomes, especially for students involved in accidents near school areas. Awareness of road conditions, vehicle limits, and proper restraint use is a key factor in preventing severe injuries in similar incidents.
