How Fire Spread Inside a Multi-Level Home Can Increase Risk
Fires inside multi-level homes can move quickly, especially in attached or twin-style residences. Once flames reach stairways or open hall areas, heat and smoke often rise to upper floors within minutes.
Smoke inhalation is a common danger in these situations. Even if flames are limited to one area, thick smoke can fill nearby rooms and make escape difficult. That is why working smoke alarms on every level of a home are recommended.
Construction materials and the layout of a house can also affect how fast a fire spreads. Shared walls in twin homes may allow heat to travel more rapidly between sections, increasing the urgency of response and evacuation.
