How High-Speed Pursuits Can Lead to Severe Multi-Casualty Crashes
Police pursuits involving stolen vehicles often involve high speeds and sudden driving decisions. These conditions can reduce control and increase the likelihood of losing traction, especially when drivers run red lights or make abrupt maneuvers.
When a vehicle strikes fixed objects such as poles or medians, the impact force can eject occupants, particularly if they are not properly restrained. Ejection significantly increases the risk of fatal injuries.
Crashes that occur during pursuits may involve multiple impacts over a short distance. Emergency responders typically focus on stabilizing victims and securing the roadway while investigators reconstruct the sequence of events.
