How Severe Weather Can Increase the Risk of Highway Crashes
Rain and storms can make driving conditions more dangerous by reducing visibility and making roads slippery. Water buildup on highways may lead to hydroplaning, where tires lose contact with the road surface.
When vehicles lose traction, drivers may struggle to maintain control, especially at higher speeds. Sudden movements, such as braking or turning, can increase the risk of spinning out.
Wet conditions can also lengthen stopping distances, making it harder to avoid hazards ahead. Drivers are often advised to reduce speed and maintain extra space between vehicles during storms to reduce the risk of accidents.
