Clear Creek County, CO (April 14, 2026) – A major crash involving dozens of vehicles was reported Tuesday afternoon, April 14 on Interstate 70 near the Eisenhower Tunnel and the Highway 6 on-ramp.
The incident occurred shortly before 3 p.m. when rapidly changing winter conditions created sudden white-out visibility and dangerously slick roads. Reports indicate more than 75 vehicles were involved, including multiple semi trucks and passenger vehicles, with several spinning out across the eastbound lanes.
Emergency units responded to the scene where damaged vehicles were scattered along the snowy interstate. Authorities confirmed that 19 people were taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to serious. No fatalities were reported.
Strong wind gusts and heavy snowfall were present at the time of the crash, contributing to reduced visibility and loss of traction across the roadway. The eastbound lanes were shut down near the Eisenhower Tunnel as crews worked to clear wreckage and assist those involved.
The incident remains under investigation, and more details will be released as they become available. We are thinking of those injured as they continue to receive medical care.
How Sudden Snow and White-Out Conditions Impact Highway Safety
Rapid snowfall and strong winds can quickly reduce visibility on mountain highways, making it difficult for drivers to see slowing or stopped traffic ahead. When white-out conditions develop, even familiar routes can become hazardous within minutes.
Icy or snow-covered pavement also reduces tire grip, increasing stopping distances and the likelihood of spin-outs. Large vehicles such as semi trucks may require significantly more space to slow down safely in these conditions.
Chain-reaction crashes are more likely when multiple vehicles are traveling at highway speeds in low visibility. Once one vehicle loses control, others may be unable to react in time, leading to multi-vehicle collisions across several lanes.
