Walnut Creek Township, OH (March 4, 2026) – A bicyclist was killed, and a motorist seriously hurt after a chain-reaction crash early on Wednesday, March 4, along OH-39 east of Township Road 420. The incident occurred around 5:06 a.m. in Holmes County’s Walnut Creek Township.

Authorities said 30-year-old Jason L. Yoder of Sugarcreek was riding a Delsol electric bicycle westbound on the berm. He attempted to turn left into the driveway of Sharon Mennonite Church when his bicycle entered the path of a westbound 2007 Jeep Wrangler. The bicycle struck the passenger side of the Jeep.

Yoder was wearing a reflective vest and had a working rear flashing light. The Jeep driver, 27-year-old Anthony S. Parson of Stone Creek, was wearing a seatbelt and stopped on the south berm, facing east. He got out to check on Yoder, who was lying in the eastbound lane.

Moments later, an eastbound 2004 Honda Accord driven by 55-year-old Steven R. Erb of Millersburg struck both men. Yoder was pronounced dead at the scene. Parson was taken to Akron General Hospital in critical condition. Erb was not injured.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.

How Turning Movements and Low-Light Conditions Can Increase Crash Risks

Early-morning travel can pose visibility challenges for both drivers and cyclists. Even with reflective gear and flashing lights, it may be difficult for motorists to quickly detect someone making a turn across traffic, especially on rural highways with limited lighting.

Left-hand turns are among the more complex movements on the road. They require judging the speed and distance of approaching vehicles while crossing active lanes. A small miscalculation can lead to a sudden collision.

Chain-reaction crashes can also occur when vehicles stop in or near travel lanes after an initial impact. In low-light conditions, oncoming drivers may have little time to react to people or vehicles in the roadway.
