Bluefield, WV (March 5, 2025) – Emergency crews responded to a two-vehicle crash on Thursday afternoon along US-460 in Bluefield that left at least two people injured and temporarily disrupted traffic near a busy shopping area.
According to the West Virginia State Police, the collision occurred shortly after 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of US-460 near the entrance to Mercer Mall.
Authorities reported that the crash involved a passenger car and a pickup truck. The impact caused one of the vehicles to leak fluids onto the roadway, requiring specialized cleanup before traffic could safely resume through the area.
Emergency responders with Mercer County EMS evaluated multiple individuals at the scene. At least two people received medical attention, and one of those individuals was transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment. Officials stated that the injuries sustained in the crash were considered non-life-threatening.
Due to the wreckage and roadway hazards, westbound lanes of US-460 were closed for approximately one hour while emergency crews cleared the scene. Troopers with the West Virginia State Police, along with deputies from the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office, directed traffic through the Mercer Mall parking lot and nearby side streets to reduce congestion and allow motorists to bypass the crash site.
Investigators indicated that a failure to yield while turning into the mall complex may have been a contributing factor in the collision. The crash remains under active investigation as authorities continue to review the circumstances leading up to the incident.
We extend our best wishes to those injured and hope for their full and speedy recovery.
Intersection Turning Conflicts Are a Common Cause of Two-Vehicle Collisions
Crashes at commercial entrance intersections frequently occur when drivers attempt to turn across oncoming traffic into parking lots or shopping centers. In these situations, motorists must carefully judge the speed and distance of approaching vehicles before completing a turn.
Busy corridors such as US-460 often carry a steady flow of traffic throughout the day. When vehicles traveling straight maintain consistent speeds, even a small miscalculation by a turning driver can lead to a collision with significant impact forces.
These crashes may also involve limited visibility due to nearby buildings, parked vehicles, or multiple access points into commercial areas. Drivers entering or exiting large retail complexes may encounter unpredictable traffic movements, particularly during peak shopping hours.
Investigators examining these incidents typically evaluate right-of-way compliance, vehicle positioning, skid marks, traffic flow patterns, and witness statements. Understanding how the vehicles approached the intersection helps determine whether a turning maneuver, distraction, or other factor contributed to the crash.
