Walker, MI (March 6, 2026) – A semi-truck driver suffered severe injuries in a crash on Wednesday, March 4, on northbound US-131 near Ann St in the Grand Rapids area of Walker.
Emergency units responded around 11:30 a.m. after reports of a serious collision along the highway. Earlier in the day, a separate two-car crash occurred on northbound US-131 south of West River Dr, closing two lanes and causing heavy traffic backups near Ann St.
While traffic was slowed in the area, a semi-truck reportedly failed to slow for stopped vehicles and crashed into a flatbed truck carrying scaffolding. The force of the collision caused the semi to overturn and strike a third vehicle traveling in an adjacent lane.
The driver of the semi, a 60-year-old man from Oscoda, was pulled from the damaged truck and taken to a nearby hospital with severe injuries. Officials have not released additional details about the condition of the other drivers involved.
Northbound US-131 at Ann St was closed for several hours while crews cleared the wreckage, and traffic was redirected. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
Why Secondary Crashes Often Occur During Traffic Backups
Secondary crashes can happen when traffic slows suddenly after an earlier accident. Drivers approaching the scene may not immediately realize that vehicles ahead have stopped or slowed significantly.
On busy highways, vehicles often travel at consistent speeds until they reach congestion. When traffic suddenly backs up, drivers who are following too closely may have little time to brake safely.
Large trucks require longer distances to slow down compared to passenger vehicles. When traffic stops suddenly, it can be difficult for heavy vehicles to slow in time to avoid a crash. These situations can lead to additional collisions involving multiple vehicles in the same area.
