How Center Line Crossovers Often Lead to Serious Collisions
Crashes that occur when a vehicle crosses the center line can be especially severe. These incidents often involve vehicles traveling in opposite directions at normal roadway speeds.
When two vehicles collide head-on or at an angle after crossing the center line, the combined impact force can be significant. This type of collision often results in significant vehicle damage.
Several factors can contribute to a vehicle drifting across the center line. Driver fatigue, distraction, medical events, or attempts to avoid road hazards may lead to a loss of lane control.
Because opposing lanes carry traffic moving toward each other, even a brief lane departure can result in a serious crash if another vehicle is approaching at the same time.
