Why Rural Highway Crashes Can Be Difficult to Investigate
Crashes on rural highways can present challenges during early investigations. These roads often have fewer traffic cameras or nearby businesses that might capture video of the incident.
Investigators may rely on physical evidence from the crash scene to help determine what happened. Vehicle damage, skid marks, debris patterns, and the final resting positions of vehicles can provide valuable clues.
Witness information can also be limited on rural routes, especially in the evening when traffic is lighter. As a result, crews may spend additional time examining the roadway and the surrounding area.
Because many rural highways allow higher speeds and have fewer protective barriers, collisions in these areas can result in significant vehicle damage and serious injuries.
