Hopkinsville, KY (March 8, 2026) – A Clarksville man died on Saturday evening, March 7, after a crash involving a tractor-trailer on Fort Campbell Blvd in Hopkinsville. The collision occurred just after 6 p.m., according to information reported by WKDZ Radio.

Early reports indicate the tractor-trailer was traveling southbound before attempting a U-turn to head northbound. During the maneuver, the truck collided with a northbound passenger vehicle along the busy corridor.

The impact left the smaller vehicle trapped beneath the tractor-trailer. Emergency units worked at the scene to free the driver, who was identified as 33-year-old Bernice Franklin of Clarksville.

Franklin was extricated from the wreckage and taken to a nearby hospital while receiving CPR. Despite medical efforts, he later died from his injuries.

The crash caused significant disruption in the area. Authorities reported that Fort Campbell Blvd would remain closed for several hours while crews worked at the scene.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. Our condolences go out to the victim’s loved ones.

Why Tractor-Trailer U-Turns Can Create Dangerous Roadway Situations

Large trucks require significantly more space and time to complete turning movements than smaller vehicles. When a tractor-trailer attempts a U-turn, the maneuver often occupies multiple lanes and can temporarily block opposing traffic. Drivers approaching from the opposite direction may have little time to react if the turn happens unexpectedly.

The size and weight of commercial trucks also increase the risk of injury in a collision. Passenger vehicles can become pinned beneath a trailer or pushed into surrounding lanes during an impact. This can cause severe damage and complicate rescue efforts for emergency crews.

Roadway design can also affect the riskiness of these manoeuvres. Wide highways, limited turn areas, and heavy evening traffic can make large turning movements more challenging. In many situations, designated turn zones or alternate routes are used to reduce the need for large trucks to perform U-turns on active roadways.
