Why Rural Highway Intersections See Serious Crashes
Intersections between rural highways and local roads can present several risks for drivers. Traffic on highways often moves at higher speeds, while vehicles entering from side roads may need to cross or merge into that faster traffic.
Drivers approaching these intersections must judge both distance and speed quickly. If a vehicle on the side road enters the intersection at the wrong moment, a collision can occur before either driver has time to react.
Visibility may also be affected by weather, terrain, or roadside vegetation. Even when the roadway is clear, drivers may have limited time to see approaching traffic.
Because of these factors, crashes at rural intersections can occur even during normal driving conditions when two vehicles arrive at the crossing at the same time.
