Wantagh, NY (March 11, 2026) – A former New York City police officer died after being struck by a pickup truck on Monday, March 9, on a residential street in Wantagh.
Emergency units responded to the intersection of Lufberry Avenue and Briard Street around 5:22 p.m. after reports of a pedestrian crash. Authorities said a 57-year-old man was driving a 2025 GMC pickup truck westbound on Lufberry Avenue before turning south onto Briard Street. During the turn, the truck struck a pedestrian identified as 53-year-old Elena Crowley of Wantagh. She was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Officials said the driver remained at the scene following the incident, and no additional information about the circumstances leading up to the crash has been released.
Crowley previously served as a New York City police officer and retired from full-time duty in 2021, according to reports.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they are provided.
