How Severe Weather Can Create Road Hazards for Drivers
Roadways such as U.S. Highway 11 often pass through areas with trees and open land, which can become hazardous during strong storms. High winds and heavy rain may cause trees or large branches to fall into the roadway with little warning.
Drivers encountering debris in the road may attempt sudden maneuvers to avoid it. Quick swerves or abrupt braking can increase the risk of losing control or colliding with another vehicle traveling nearby.
Storm conditions can also reduce visibility and make it harder to spot hazards ahead. Wet pavement, standing water, and debris scattered across travel lanes can all increase the chance of crashes when severe weather moves through an area.
