What Factors Can Contribute to Pedestrian Crashes on Roadways?
Pedestrian crashes can occur for several reasons, especially in low-light conditions such as early morning hours. Limited visibility can make it harder for drivers to see someone walking in or near traffic lanes, particularly on roads without sidewalks or street lighting.
A pedestrian’s position on the roadway also affects risk levels. Walking within a traffic lane increases the chance of being struck, especially when drivers are not expecting foot traffic in that area. Speed and reaction time can further influence whether a driver can stop in time.
Clothing visibility and awareness from both drivers and pedestrians can make a difference. Reflective materials, proper lighting, and staying outside active lanes when possible may help reduce the likelihood of such incidents.
