North Sacramento, CA (March 21, 2026) – A motorist was killed after being struck on the northbound lanes of the Capital City Freeway south of El Camino Ave in North Sacramento.

The crash occurred around 1:53 a.m. on Friday, March 20. California Highway Patrol officers responding to the scene found a person lying in the roadway. The motorist was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe the victim had stopped their vehicle to remove a large piece of wood from the freeway when they were struck by a passing vehicle. All lanes of the freeway in the Swanston Estates neighborhood were closed for several hours following the incident, but have since reopened.

No additional information about the victim or the vehicle that struck them has been released. The identity of the deceased is expected to be confirmed by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office once family members are notified.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. Our condolences go out to the victim’s loved ones.

Why Stopping on Highways Can Be Extremely Dangerous

Stopping on a freeway exposes drivers to high-speed traffic and limited reaction time for passing vehicles. Even short stops, such as removing debris, can put motorists at serious risk.

Highways are designed for continuous traffic flow, and drivers may not expect vehicles to be stationary on lanes. Collisions in these situations often result in severe injuries or fatalities because of the speed and force of impacting vehicles.

Visibility, time of day, and roadway conditions also affect the likelihood of a crash. Pedestrians or drivers outside their vehicles on a freeway have minimal protection, making any incident extremely hazardous.
