Why Pedestrian Crashes Happen on Highways
Pedestrian crashes on highways are often deadly because vehicles are traveling at high speeds. Drivers have very little time to react when someone unexpectedly enters the roadway.
Limited visibility, especially at night or in rural areas, increases the risk of being struck. Shoulders and medians are not always designed to safely accommodate pedestrians.
Even brief exposure to a highway can result in serious or fatal injuries. These incidents highlight the importance of keeping pedestrians off high-speed roadways and using safe crossing areas whenever possible.
