Rollover Crashes and Their Risks at Rural Intersections
Rollover crashes often occur when a vehicle makes sudden maneuvers or collides with another vehicle at an intersection. High center-of-gravity vehicles, such as pickup trucks and SUVs, are particularly vulnerable to flipping during collisions or sharp turns.
Rural intersections can increase the risk due to higher speeds, limited lighting, and minimal traffic control devices. Drivers may misjudge the right-of-way or fail to notice stop signs, leading to side-impact collisions that can trigger a rollover.
Passengers are at higher risk of serious injury in rollovers because the vehicle’s roof may collapse or occupants may be thrown around inside the cabin. Seat belts and proper seating positions are key factors in reducing harm, while emergency response times in rural areas can affect outcomes following serious crashes.
