Why Wrong-Way Crashes on Highways Can Be Especially Dangerous
Wrong-way crashes occur when a vehicle travels against the intended direction of traffic. These situations often happen on divided highways or major roads where drivers mistakenly enter exit ramps or travel in the wrong lane.
Because vehicles approach each other at full speed from opposite directions, these collisions often involve severe impact forces. Drivers may have little time to react or move out of the way once they see an oncoming vehicle.
Nighttime conditions can increase the risk of wrong-way incidents. Reduced visibility and limited traffic in the early morning hours may delay a driver’s recognition that they are traveling in the wrong direction.
Roadway signs, reflective markers, and barrier designs help guide traffic and alert drivers. These safety measures are intended to reduce confusion and help prevent vehicles from entering lanes meant for opposing traffic.
