What Should Be Known About Bicycle Safety Near Schools in Texas?
School zones in Texas see a significant increase in both vehicle and foot traffic during morning drop-off hours, which raises the risk for students traveling by bike. Cyclists approaching or leaving school campuses share the road with drivers who may be distracted, running late, or unfamiliar with the area. This combination makes the stretch near school entrances one of the more hazardous environments for young riders on any given weekday morning.
When a driver leaves the scene after hitting a cyclist, it becomes a hit-and-run, which carries serious legal consequences in Texas regardless of the severity of the injuries. Physical evidence such as vehicle paint, debris, and surveillance footage from nearby cameras can all help identify the vehicle involved. In Collin County, school-area crashes are taken seriously, given the concentration of young people traveling through these zones each day.
