Greenville, NC (April 9, 2026) – A rear-end crash during rush-hour traffic involving a work van and a box truck sent both vehicles into separate ditches on April 9. It took place along N Memorial Drive in Pitt County.
The accident happened around 9:30 a.m. on Staton Mill Road, between Staton Mill Road and Glenview Drive, when the van slowed to turn right into a residential driveway and was struck from behind by the truck.
The impact pushed both vehicles off the roadway and into opposite ditches. The van had heavy rear-end damage, while the truck’s hood was nearly torn loose. Two people riding in the van suffered minor injuries. The truck driver, 54-year-old Jerome Pickens, was cited after the collision for failing to reduce speed. One lane of N Memorial Dr was temporarily closed while emergency units worked at the scene.
The crash remains under review by authorities. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
What Is Often Reviewed After a Rear-End Crash on a Highway?
After a rear-end crash on a highway, early reviews usually focus on traffic flow, following distance, and whether the vehicle that was rear-ended was slowing or turning at the time of impact. Skid marks, ditch positions, and the final resting spots of the vehicles can help show how forcefully the crash happened.
Damage patterns also provide useful context. Heavy rear damage to one vehicle and front-end damage to the other often help explain how the impact occurred. Roadway features, including driveways, nearby intersections, and lane closures, may also help build a clearer picture of the event. When several people are riding in one vehicle, minor injuries may not always be obvious right away, so later medical evaluations can sometimes provide added clarity.
