What Conditions Can Affect Pedestrian Safety on Rural Roads?
Rural roads often present different challenges compared to city streets. Many areas have limited lighting, which can make it harder for drivers to see pedestrians, especially in the evening.
Higher speed limits are also common in rural settings. This can reduce the amount of time a driver has to react if someone is in or near the roadway. Longer stopping distances can increase the severity of a crash.
Road design may also play a part. Narrow shoulders, fewer crosswalks, and limited signage can affect how pedestrians and vehicles share the space. Awareness from both drivers and pedestrians can help reduce risks in these environments.
