Why Bicycle Crashes Can Lead to Serious Leg Injuries
Bicyclists have little protection when they are hit by a vehicle. A rider may fall onto the pavement or become pinned by part of the bike or vehicle. This can lead to broken bones, cuts, and other painful injuries.
Leg injuries are common in bicycle crashes because the rider’s lower body is exposed. The impact can affect the knees, ankles, hips, or shins. Even a single fracture may require emergency care and a long recovery.
Street design can also affect bicycle safety. Intersections, parked vehicles, driveways, and turning traffic may reduce the space between riders and drivers. Clear visibility and careful movement through shared roads can reduce the chance of a serious collision.
