Why Pedestrian Crashes on Freeways Are Often Severe
Freeways are designed for high-speed vehicle travel and are generally not intended for pedestrian activity. Because of the higher speeds involved, drivers often have limited time to react if a person is on the roadway.
When a pedestrian is present on a freeway, visibility and reaction time become major factors. Drivers traveling at highway speeds may not notice someone in the roadway until they are very close.
Freeway environments also include multiple lanes of traffic moving at similar speeds. This can make it harder for drivers to slow down or change lanes quickly to avoid a person on the road.
Lighting conditions during early morning hours can also reduce visibility. When combined with high speeds, these factors can increase the risk of serious outcomes when a pedestrian is struck on a freeway.
