Santa Barbara, CA (March 28, 2026) – One person was injured, and another was arrested following a hit-and-run crash at the intersection of Cota St and State St in downtown Santa Barbara.
Emergency units responded to the crash around 9:45 p.m. on Friday, March 27. Officials said a white pickup truck traveling west on Cota St struck two vehicles that were stopped at a traffic signal at State St.
After the crash, the driver of the pickup reportedly left the scene on foot and ran north along the 600 block of State St. A nearby witness chased the driver and caught him on the first block of E Ortega St.
Authorities identified the driver as 50-year-old Ryan A. Hill of Montecito. He was taken into custody and later booked into jail on suspicion of drunken driving and hit-and-run with injuries.
Officials said one of the drivers in the vehicles that were struck suffered minor injuries and was taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. Another person at the scene reported minor pain but did not require transport.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as they become available. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
Why Rear-End Crashes Frequently Occur at Traffic Signals
Rear-end crashes are common at intersections where vehicles slow or stop for traffic signals. When a driver fails to slow down in time, the vehicle may strike the back of another car waiting at the light.
These crashes often occur when drivers are distracted or following too closely. When the distance between vehicles is too short, there may not be enough time to brake safely if traffic suddenly stops.
Traffic signals can also create sudden changes in traffic flow. Drivers approaching a red light may slow quickly, and motorists behind them must react immediately to avoid a collision.
Although rear-end crashes often happen at lower speeds, injuries can still occur. Even moderate impacts can cause neck or back pain, particularly for occupants who are not expecting the collision.
