What Factors Can Affect Pedestrian Safety During Overnight Crashes?
Pedestrian crashes that occur during overnight hours often involve reduced visibility. Darkness can make it harder for drivers to see someone crossing the street, especially in areas with limited lighting. Street design, traffic signals, and vehicle speed can also affect how quickly a driver can react.
Clothing color and visibility may influence how easily pedestrians are seen. Reflective materials or well-lit crossing areas can help increase visibility. Larger roads with multiple lanes may also increase risk because drivers must watch in several directions at once.
Vehicle speed is another key factor. Higher speeds reduce reaction time and increase stopping distance. Even at moderate speeds, a pedestrian crash can result in severe or fatal injuries due to the lack of physical protection.
