Wichita, KS (May 21, 2026) – A 39-year-old bicyclist was hurt on Thursday afternoon, May 21, after a vehicle hit him near 13th Street and Dellrose Street in Wichita.
The accident was reported at about 1:31 p.m. after police were tracking a light gray car linked to earlier reports of shots fired near the 800 block of North Dellrose Street. The vehicle hit the cyclist at 13th Street and Dellrose Street, then continued westbound on 13th Street.
Emergency units evaluated the bicyclist for non-life-threatening injuries. A later trauma alert described him as a 39-year-old male hit at more than 20 miles per hour.
The police later said they were searching near Murdock and Crestway for a suspect who fled on foot after a vehicle pursuit. Still, the cause of the collision remains under review as more details are confirmed.
We hope the bicyclist receives the care and support needed for recovery.
Why Bicycle Injuries Can Be Serious After Vehicle Contact
Bicyclists can be badly hurt when they are hit by a vehicle because they have little protection from direct force. Even when early reports describe non-life-threatening harm, medical checks may focus on the head, neck, back, ribs, arms, and legs. A helmet can reduce some risk, but it cannot prevent every injury.
Street layout can also affect how a bicycle-related roadway emergency unfolds. Intersections, parked cars, traffic speed, and driver movement might all limit reaction time. When a vehicle keeps moving after hitting a cyclist, details such as direction of travel, witness accounts, and nearby camera footage may help explain what happened. Pain, swelling, dizziness, or trouble moving can also appear later, so follow-up care might be needed after the first evaluation.
