Right-Turn Crashes Involving Large Trucks and Cyclists Near Boulder
Right-turn collisions between large trucks and cyclists are among the most dangerous crash types on roads shared by both. When a dump truck or similar vehicle turns right, its wide turning radius and large blind spots can make it extremely difficult for the driver to see a cyclist continuing straight through an intersection, even in broad daylight.
Colorado law requires drivers to yield to cyclists traveling in the same direction before making a turn, but the sheer size difference between a dump truck and a bicycle leaves little margin for error when timing is misjudged. Cyclists are particularly vulnerable at intersections where truck traffic is common, especially on routes like Highway 119 that connect rural areas to urban corridors.
Boulder County has made significant investments in cycling infrastructure in recent years, but rural and semi-rural intersections along state highways remain challenging environments for riders. Cyclists sharing roadways with commercial vehicles are advised to make eye contact with drivers when possible and exercise extra caution at intersections with turning traffic.
