Why Pedestrian Crashes Often Happen Along Major Highways
Pedestrian accidents along highways and busy intersections can happen for several reasons, especially during overnight or early morning hours. Reduced visibility, limited lighting, and higher travel speeds may make it harder for drivers to spot people walking near the roadway.
Areas near highway shoulders and intersections can also become more dangerous when multiple traffic patterns meet. Drivers might be focused on merging, traffic signals, or nearby vehicles while pedestrians attempt to cross or walk along the road.
Road design can also affect pedestrian safety. Intersections with railroad crossings, multiple lanes, or wide turning areas may create added risks for both drivers and people on foot. In many cases, investigators later review lighting conditions, vehicle positioning, roadway markings, and visibility to better understand how a collision occurred.
