Brookshire, TX (March 13, 2026) –A Brookshire man died after a multi-vehicle crash involving an ATV and an 18-wheeler at an intersection along FM 362. The accident occurred around 1 p.m. on Friday, March 13, at the intersection of FM 362 and Garvie Rd. Emergency units responded to the scene after reports of a multi-vehicle crash.
Reports state that 65-year-old Ernest Ray Kelley was driving a Tracker Pro ATV south on FM 362 toward Garvie Road. At the same time, a Mercedes traveling north on FM 362 was preparing to turn left onto Garvie Rd while a Ford F-250 slowed behind it. A Freightliner 18-wheeler approached the vehicles from behind and failed to control its speed. The semi-truck struck the rear of the Ford, causing the pickup to spin into the southbound lanes of FM 362. The spinning truck then collided with the ATV. Kelley was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver and passenger in the Ford F-250 were hurt and taken to a hospital for treatment. Officials reported that the driver and passenger in the 18-wheeler, as well as the driver of the Mercedes, were not injured.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
How Multi-Vehicle Crashes Can Develop at Busy Intersections
Multi-vehicle crashes often occur at intersections where vehicles slow, stop, or turn in different directions. Traffic changes quickly in these areas, especially when drivers prepare to turn or wait for oncoming vehicles to pass.
Large trucks require more stopping distance than smaller vehicles. When traffic ahead slows suddenly, a truck may need extra space to stop safely. If the distance is insufficient, the impact from behind can push vehicles forward or into other lanes.
When a vehicle spins or slides after a collision, it can enter lanes of oncoming traffic. This movement can lead to additional impacts involving other vehicles traveling through the area. Intersections with turning traffic, mixed vehicle types, and nearby rural roads can increase the chances of multi-vehicle accidents, especially during busy daytime travel.
