Calcasieu Parish, LA (May 9, 2026) – Two men died on Friday afternoon following a head-on collision on Louisiana Highway 27 near Natalie Road, according to Louisiana State Police.
Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to the crash shortly after 3:30 p.m. Authorities identified the victims as 23-year-old Edgardo Reyes-Rivera of Denham Springs and 35-year-old Jonathon Puente of Beaumont.
Investigators said Reyes-Rivera was driving a 2022 Toyota Camry northbound on LA 27 while Puente was traveling southbound in a 2014 BMW 550i. For reasons still under investigation, the Toyota reportedly crossed the centerline into the southbound lane and collided head-on with the BMW.
Reyes-Rivera, who officials said was not wearing a seat belt, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
Puente, who was properly restrained, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
State police confirmed that routine toxicology samples were collected from both drivers and submitted for analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities continue working to determine the exact circumstances that led to the collision.
Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of Edgardo Reyes-Rivera and Jonathon Puente during this difficult time.
Head-on Collisions and Roadway Safety
Head-on crashes are among the deadliest types of roadway collisions because of the combined impact forces when vehicles traveling in opposite directions collide. These crashes frequently result in catastrophic or fatal injuries, especially on rural highways where vehicles often travel at higher speeds.
Louisiana State Police continue to remind motorists to remain attentive behind the wheel and avoid distractions that can lead to lane departures and serious collisions. Officials also stress the importance of proper seat belt use, noting that restraints significantly reduce the risk of severe injury or death during major crashes.
Investigators will continue examining roadway evidence, vehicle data, and toxicology results as part of the ongoing investigation into the fatal Louisiana Highway 27 crash.
