Stamford, CT (May 9, 2026) – One person died following a house fire early Friday morning on Woodmere Road in Stamford.
Emergency units responded to the home around 4:20 a.m. after reports of a residential fire. Upon arrival, crews found heavy flames coming from the first floor of the house and learned that one person was still inside the residence.
Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control within minutes before locating a male victim inside the home. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials said three other people escaped the residence before crews arrived. Two of those individuals were taken to the hospital for injuries suffered while attempting to rescue the victim from inside the burning home.
The residence sustained significant fire damage as crews worked to extinguish the flames and search the structure.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and are thinking of those injured as they recover.
Why Residential Fires Can Spread Quickly During Early Morning Hours
House fires that begin overnight or early in the morning can be especially dangerous because occupants may be asleep when the fire starts. Delayed detection can allow smoke and flames to spread rapidly through parts of a home before evacuation begins.
First-floor fires may also block primary exits, making escape more difficult for people inside. Smoke inhalation is one of the leading dangers during residential fires, even before flames reach occupied areas.
Emergency crews often prioritize search and rescue efforts immediately after arriving at active structure fires. Investigators later examine burn patterns, electrical systems, appliances, and other possible ignition sources to determine how the fire started and spread through the residence.
