Denver, CO (May 9, 2026) – A pedestrian was killed on Friday night after being struck by a Frontier Airlines airplane during takeoff at Denver International Airport, according to airport officials and Frontier Airlines.

Authorities said the incident occurred around 11:19 p.m. as Frontier Flight 4345, an Airbus A321 bound for Los Angeles, was departing Denver International Airport.

Investigators said the individual allegedly breached airport security, climbed over a perimeter fence, and entered the runway area moments before the collision. The aircraft struck a pedestrian while accelerating for takeoff on Runway 17L.

The unidentified pedestrian suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the impact, the flight crew reported an engine fire and smoke inside the cabin. Pilots immediately aborted takeoff and safely stopped the aircraft on the runway.

Passengers evacuated the plane using emergency slides before being transported back to the terminal by bus. Frontier Airlines stated that no major injuries were reported among the 224 passengers and seven crew members onboard. However, airport officials said 12 people reported injuries, and five were transported to local hospitals for evaluation.

The flight was canceled following the incident.

Federal investigators, including the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration, are coordinating with airport operations and local law enforcement as the investigation continues.

Officials have not yet determined the exact cause of the reported engine fire or other contributing factors related to the incident.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic event.

Runway Safety and Airport Security Concerns

Unauthorized access to airport runways creates extremely dangerous conditions for aircraft operations, passengers, and airport personnel. Aircraft traveling at high speeds during takeoff have limited ability to stop or maneuver, making runway incursions especially hazardous.

Commercial aircraft require substantial distance and time to safely abort takeoff procedures, especially when traveling at high speed. Even with rapid emergency response from flight crews, runway emergencies can place hundreds of passengers and airport workers at risk within seconds. Aviation incidents involving pedestrians on active runways remain extremely rare, but they often lead to major operational disruptions, emergency evacuations, and extensive federal investigations.

Federal aviation authorities continue to stress the importance of airport perimeter security and public awareness regarding the serious risks associated with entering restricted airfield areas. Investigators will continue reviewing surveillance footage, flight data, and airport security measures as part of the ongoing investigation into the fatal incident at Denver International Airport.
