Greenwood, IN (May 9, 2026) – Six people were injured on Saturday morning after a police pursuit on Interstate 65 ended in a serious multi-vehicle crash in Johnson County, according to Indiana State Police.
Authorities said the incident began when a Versailles District trooper attempted to stop a gray Chevrolet Equinox traveling northbound on I-65 near mile marker 75 for speeding and allegedly displaying false license plate information.
Police said the driver, later identified as 25-year-old Nicole Bryant of Indianapolis, refused to stop, leading troopers on a pursuit that continued for nearly 25 miles into Johnson County.
Investigators stated that, as Bryant approached mile marker 99, she drove onto the shoulder to pass traffic. During the maneuver, her vehicle struck another car, triggering a chain-reaction collision involving four vehicles.
Emergency responders arrived and found one woman suffering critical injuries. Authorities said first responders applied multiple tourniquets before she was transported to a local hospital. She is currently listed in critical but stable condition.
Five additional people were transported to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
Bryant was taken into custody at the scene before being transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Northbound Interstate 65 remained closed for several hours while crews investigated the crash and cleared debris from the roadway.
Indiana State Police continue to investigate the incident. Formal court appearance information for Bryant had not yet been released as of Saturday evening.
Our thoughts are with all those injured in this crash, and we wish them a full recovery.
Police Pursuits and Highway Crash Risks
High-speed pursuits on busy interstate highways can create dangerous conditions for motorists, particularly when fleeing drivers attempt aggressive maneuvers through congested traffic. Chain-reaction crashes involving multiple vehicles often lead to serious injuries because drivers have limited time and space to react at highway speeds.
Traffic safety officials continue to emphasize the importance of safe driving decisions and compliance during traffic stops to reduce the risk of major collisions. Crashes involving shoulder driving, excessive speed, and evasive maneuvers can quickly escalate into life-threatening situations for both motorists and first responders.
Investigators will continue reviewing roadway evidence, witness statements, and vehicle data as part of the ongoing investigation into the Interstate 65 crash.
