Campbell Co., WY (March 16, 2026) – A sport utility vehicle collided with a state snowplow on Sunday along Interstate 90 west of Gillette, Wyoming, according to transportation officials.
Authorities with the Wyoming Department of Transportation reported that the incident occurred while a snowplow operator was clearing the westbound right shoulder of the highway.
Officials said the snowplow was actively working when a mid-size SUV struck the rear of the truck, hitting the sander unit attached to the plow. The impact caused approximately $5,000 in damage to the equipment.
At the time of the crash, the plow was generating a snow cloud while clearing the shoulder and was equipped with green flashing safety lights designed to make the vehicle more visible to approaching drivers.
A witness reported that the SUV had passed them in the right lane shortly before the collision occurred.
Officials noted that this incident marks the fifth snowplow crash reported in the state this year involving vehicles striking plows operated by the Wyoming Department of Transportation.
We hope for strength and healing for those hurt in this collision.
Why Do Vehicles Sometimes Crash Into Snowplows?
Snowplows play a critical role in maintaining safe road conditions during winter weather, but they can also create visibility challenges for drivers.
While clearing snow on highways such as Interstate 90 near Gillette, Wyoming, plows often generate snow clouds that can temporarily reduce visibility for approaching vehicles.
Transportation officials typically urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid passing snowplows when possible to help prevent collisions and keep road crews safe.
