Sweetwater Co., WY (March 16, 2026) – One person lost their life and several others were injured following a multi-vehicle crash early on Sunday on Interstate 80 near Rock Springs, Wyoming.
According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 1:53 a.m. and involved multiple semi-trucks and passenger vehicles traveling along eastbound I-80.
Investigators believe a sudden flash freeze may have contributed to the crash, causing icy roadway conditions that led to a chain-reaction collision involving an estimated 15 to 20 vehicles.
Authorities identified the victim as 29-year-old J.C. Slaugh of Utah. Officials said Slaugh was driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer when the vehicle struck a guardrail and rolled over down a steep embankment after the driver reportedly overcorrected.
Six other individuals involved in the crash were transported to nearby hospitals with injuries. Several others affected by the incident were taken to the Sweetwater County Fairgrounds for temporary shelter after the crash.
The eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 remained closed for more than 17 hours while emergency crews worked to clear the wreckage and investigate the incident.
The crash remains under investigation by the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
We extend our condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim and hope for the recovery of those injured.
What Causes Chain-Reaction Crashes on Icy Highways?
Chain-reaction crashes often occur when multiple vehicles are traveling closely together and roadway conditions suddenly change. On highways such as Interstate 80 in Wyoming, icy pavement can make it difficult for drivers to slow or stop in time.
When a vehicle loses control or stops unexpectedly, following drivers may be unable to avoid a collision, which can quickly involve numerous vehicles. Investigators typically review weather conditions, vehicle spacing, and driver actions when determining the causes of these types of incidents.
