Why Curve-Related Roadway Departures Can Be Deadly
Crashes on curved rural roads often occur when drivers misjudge speed or lose control. Curves require reduced speed and careful steering. If a vehicle leaves the roadway, fixed objects such as trees or embankments can increase the severity of impact.
When a car strikes a solid object like a tree, the force is concentrated in a small area. This can result in serious or fatal injuries, especially during high-speed or single-vehicle crashes.
Rural roads may also have limited lighting and narrow shoulders. Staying within posted speed limits and remaining alert when approaching curves can help reduce the risk of deadly roadway departure crashes.
