What Happens During a Hit-and-Run Investigation?
Hit-and-run cases usually require investigators to gather information from several sources to identify the driver who left the roadway. Early evidence may include witness statements, vehicle descriptions, photographs, roadway debris, and surveillance footage from nearby businesses or traffic cameras.
Damage patterns on the vehicles involved can also help reconstruct what occurred. In some cases, parts left behind by a fleeing vehicle may provide clues about its make, model, or year. Investigators may also review license plate information, electronic records, and other available evidence to determine who was behind the wheel.
Because information is often limited during the first few hours after a hit-and-run, additional details may emerge as evidence is reviewed and new leads are developed.
