Why Are Highway Closures Common After Multi-Vehicle Crashes?
Highway closures mostly follow serious roadway incidents because crews need space to assist those involved and safely remove vehicles. When vehicles stop in travel lanes, medians, or shoulders, traffic patterns can become unpredictable and create additional risks for passing motorists.
During these situations, workers may assess vehicle positions, document roadway evidence, and inspect conditions that could have contributed to what happened. Temporary lane closures also help protect people receiving medical attention and allow cleanup operations to proceed more efficiently.
The length of a closure can vary depending on factors such as traffic volume, vehicle damage, and whether specialized equipment is needed. Even after vehicles are removed, crews may remain on site to ensure the roadway is safe before normal traffic flow resumes.
