Freeport, IL (August 29, 2026) – Several people were injured Thursday afternoon in a multi-vehicle crash on IL-26 North near Winneshiek Road in rural Freeport. The collision occurred while traffic had stopped for roadway line painting by IDOT crews.
Investigators said a semi tractor and tanker trailer struck the rear of a stopped vehicle. The impact pushed that vehicle into another vehicle, and both left the roadway and entered a cemetery east of IL-26. The semi then struck a third vehicle from behind, sending it off the roadway and into a ditch west of IL-26.
Firefighters had to extricate the driver of the first vehicle, while other drivers and passengers were taken to local hospitals with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. The semi driver, identified as 30-year-old Scott Messina, was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and later released with a mandatory court appearance.
IL-26 remained closed for about two hours while crews assisted those involved and cleared the roadway. The incident remains under investigation. Our thoughts are with everyone injured in the collision as they recover.
