Caroline County, MD (February 28, 2026) – A 30-year-old man from Ridgely, Maryland, was killed in a crash involving a Kia Sorento and an Isuzu box truck on MD-480 just north of Eveland Rd on Thursday afternoon, February 26. Emergency units responded shortly before 2:00 p.m. after the vehicles were found off the roadway.
Authorities identified the deceased driver as Joseph Dsouza. The passenger in the Kia, Hillary Coelho, 50, was airlifted to a local trauma center and remains hospitalized. The driver of the box truck, James Sherry, 50, was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries.
Preliminary reports indicate the Isuzu box truck crossed the center line into the southbound lane. Investigators believe the Kia attempted to avoid a head-on collision by moving onto the shoulder, where the crash occurred. Authorities noted that impairment may have been a contributing factor, and charges are pending.
Troopers, EMS personnel, and transportation officials assisted at the scene, including road closures and detours. Both vehicles were located off the roadway at the time of response.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
Why Head-On Collisions with Large Vehicles Are Often Severe
Head-on crashes between passenger vehicles and large trucks or commercial vehicles are especially dangerous due to the size and weight difference. Even at moderate speeds, the force of impact can cause severe injuries or fatalities for occupants of smaller vehicles.
Roadway conditions, lane crossings, and sudden evasive maneuvers can increase the risk of collisions. Vehicles attempting to avoid impact may end up off the roadway, which can also contribute to injuries. Drivers may have very little time to react to oncoming traffic, particularly if a truck crosses the center line unexpectedly.
Safety features like seat belts and airbags can help reduce injuries, but collisions with large trucks remain particularly hazardous. Careful driving and maintaining lane discipline are key factors in preventing such accidents.
