How Pedestrian Crashes at Night on State Roads Often Occur
Pedestrian crashes on state highways often occur in low-visibility conditions, especially at night, when drivers have less time to react to pedestrians in the roadway. High-speed roads can increase the severity of these incidents due to reduced stopping distance.
In many cases, pedestrians are harder to see if they are not in marked crosswalks or if the lighting is limited along the roadway. Drivers traveling at normal speeds may not be able to avoid a collision if a person enters the lane unexpectedly.
Road conditions, visibility, and traffic speed all play a role in how these crashes unfold. Investigators typically review vehicle movement, roadway layout, and environmental factors to better understand what happened in the moments leading up to the impact.
